STORM STORY 32-33
What Sidr did …
When Cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh, it destroyed almost all
the paddy and other crops that the farmers had planted. It also
destroyed large areas of the Sundarbans, the famous mangrove
forests, known for their wide variety of animals, birds, and
plants. These forests are the home of the Royal Bengal
tiger. Cyclone Sidr brought with it a huge seven-feet-high
storm surge, which destroyed much of the wildlife. It also
uprooted most of the trees, used by birds for nesting.
According to experts, forty species of mammals, four
hundred types of birds, and two hundred varieties of
fish in the Sundarbans were affected by the cyclone.
Earlier, in 1988, another cyclone and storm surge
had killed nine tigers and hundreds of deer.
Cyclones destroy acres and acres of
vegetation including crops and forests.
Did you know?
The Humane Society
of Louisiana has built
a memorial statue
honouring animals
lost during Hurricane
Katrina. The bronze,
life-size statue shows a
cat and a dog sitting on
a plank of wood.
He was a good
friend (sigh!)
susceptible to diseases.
