STORM STORY 34-35

Weather satellites

In 1960, the first weather satellite, TIROS – I, was launched into space. With it, new
methods of forecasting cyclones were introduced. The satellite relays information about
the weather from space. Supercomputers study this information to forecast, or predict,
the movement of the cyclone.

SLOSH!

Storm surges can be forecast by a computer programme called SLOSH. It stands for Sea
Lake Overland Surges from Hurricanes. It takes five factors into consideration: wind,
central pressure, size, speed, and direction of cyclones.

Flying into the cyclone

India is planning to fly planes into cyclones to study them. Pilots
are being trained for this purpose with the help of the US. Till
now, data from outside the eyewall was being used to study
cyclones. The planes flying into cyclones will enable Indian
scientists to study cyclones from inside and predict their path and
strength more correctly, so that people living along the coast can
move to safety much earlier.

Satellites gather data, which is used by scientists to study and predict
weather and warn us about approaching cyclones and storms.
