It s tough on animals and
plants too!

When cyclones hit land and cause floods and destruction, it is
not just people who suffer. Animals and birds lose their lives,
and their homes and habitats are destroyed. Pet animals are
separated from their owners, and those that are kept tied or
caged in zoos, farms, and animal factories are unable to escape.

Animal instinct …

Animals and birds are more sensitive to natural
disasters than human beings. They can sense an
earthquake or a tsunami before it actually happens.
This may be due to a sharper sense of hearing. They
can actually sense the vibrations of an earthquake
before it strikes. Animals that are not tied and are free

have been known to move to safer areas just before an
earthquake or a tsunami. But with cyclones and storm
surges, they can be caught unawares.

Thousands of animals—wild, domesticated,
and caged—die in cyclones every year.

Impact on plants

Cyclones can uproot trees and destroy
fields of crops. Storm surges bring with
them huge quantities of saltwater from the
sea, which makes the soil very salty. As
a result, large areas of land are unable to
support crops or plants of any kind.
