The worst human
disaster due to a storm
surge took place
when Cyclone Bhola
hit Bangladesh in
1970. Three hundred
thousand people lost
their lives in the storm
surge that followed.
In September 2008,
a tropical storm
named Hanna struck
Haiti. Five hundred
people were killed
by the storm surge,
while forty thousand
had to stay in
emergency shelters.

Storm surges are the most destructive
when they occur with high tides!
