A waterspout is a tornado over water.

How are waterspouts formed? …

A waterspout occurs when a water body
is warm, and the air above it is moist and
warm too. This air sweeps upwards and
meets the layers of cool air at the base of
cumuliform clouds. As it moves upwards
in a circular motion, the warm
water condenses into water
drops, which can be seen
as a funnel reaching up
to the cloud.

Waterspouts that
form over water are
called fair weather
waterspouts. They
are not so dangerous.
Those that form over
land and then move over
water are called tornadic
waterspouts. These can be
quite destructive.

Sailors have
reported more
than nine
waterspouts
forming from the
same cloud over
ninety minutes.
