Cyclone Gonu…
The strongest cyclone to hit the
Arabian coast was Cyclone
Gonu, a super cyclone that
struck the coast of Oman and
Iran in June 2007. It had wind
speeds of 250 kilometres
per hour while it was over
the sea. When it struck the
eastern tip of Oman, the
speed had dropped to 150
kilometres per hour but
it was strong enough to
cause destruction. Seven
thousand people had to be
taken to safer areas from
the island of Masirah
in Oman.
The cyclone also hit Iran,
where twenty thousand
people were affected. Houses
made of clay were washed
away in the heavy rain.
TICKER Cyclone Jokwe wreaked havoc in
Mozambique, destroying homes and
disrupting power supply.
The people most affected by cyclones are fishermen and their families, who live by the sea.
