STORM STORY 20-21

Did you know?

The Kamikaze typhoons are said to
have saved Japan from two invasions
by the Mongol general Kublai Khan, by
destroying his ships in 1274 and 1281.

When Typhoon Saomai
hit Zhejiang, it was
travelling at a speed of
216 kilometres per hour!

I must hand it to Japanese
espionage! How did they
know I was coming?

Hurricane or typhoon?

The North West Pacific Ocean experiences some of the most severe tropical
cyclones. In this region, they are called typhoons. A number of these are hurricanes
that cross over the International Date Line, and are renamed as typhoons. So a
tropical cyclone in the North-East Pacific may have one name as a hurricane and
another in the North West Pacific as a typhoon!

Faster than a speeding bullet…

A super typhoon is the name given to a typhoon that has winds blowing at
the speed of 240 kilometres per hour. They would be Category 4 or 5 on the
Saffir-Simpson scale.

Some countries affected by typhoons are Japan, the Philippines, China,
Australia, and Vietnam.

One of the worst typhoons to hit Japan was Typhoon Isewan in 1959.
It struck on September 26 with a wind force of 180 kilometres per hour.
It caused very high storm surges and destroyed forty thousand houses.
It killed five thousand people and injured thirty-nine thousand people.

Typhoon Saomai, which hit the Zhejiang and Fujian provinces of
China in 2006, was the strongest typhoon to strike the country
since 1956.
