Naming cyclones

Hurricane, typhoon, and cyclone are different names for the same weather condition.
They are all different names for tropical cyclones.

Is it a hurricane, typhoon, or a cyclone?

Hurricanes occur in the North Atlantic Ocean and in the North-East Pacific Ocean, east of
the International Date Line.

Typhoons occur in the North-West Pacific,
west of the Date Line.

Very strong tropical
cyclones are found in
the South-West Pacific
and in the South-East
Indian Ocean.

They are called
cyclones in
the North
Indian Ocean
and tropical
cyclones in the
South-West
Indian Ocean.

Tropical cyclones
are given different
names in different
regions based
on their location
with respect to the
International Date
Line.

What’ is in a name?

Scientists give cyclones, hurricanes, and typhoons names to identify them so that it is
easy to warn people of their arrival. Weather people make lists of names for every cyclone
season. When a cyclone occurs, they pick a name for it from the list.

A cyclone season is the period during a year when cyclones are formed.
