Typhoons of the Pacific

Captain Haddock in Tintin comics is often heard yelling, ‘Blistering barnacles and
thundering typhoons,’ when he is up against something difficult! He should know
because he is a sailor and must have come across some really tough typhoons in the
Pacific Ocean.

The ‘great wind’

In Greek mythology, Typhon was the son of Gaia, the earth, and Tartarus,
the infernal region. Typhon was a dangerous monster, who created very
destructive winds. Zeus, the king of the gods, defeated Typhon and threw
him into the underworld. But he continued sending terrible winds
from there. The Arabic word for storm is toofan, and the Chinese
call it taaifung. Taaifung means great wind.

Zeus fights the monster Typhon
to save the world from his
destructive winds.

TICKER Every year, over twenty-five typhoons originate in the North-West Pacific Ocean. Out of them,
