Dust devils

If you live somewhere in the hot
plains of India, you would have seen
small whirls of dust spinning along
the ground. They also pick up small
leaves and bits of paper coming
their way. These are tiny dust devils.

Rising and spinning …

Dust devils, like tornadoes, are vertically Dust devils usually last for a few minutes only,

up to a thousand metres high! But unlike
tornadoes, which start from a cloud, dust
devils start from the ground. And they are
never as destructive or long-lasting
as tornadoes.

A dust devil is formed when hot The air begins to rotate and

As it rises, it is stretched
vertically and the spinning
increases. As the air rises
further, more hot air enters from
the bottom and replaces the rising
air. The spinning increases and a dust
devil is formed.

Most often,
dust devils
form in
places where

can become
very high.
