Blizzards
Blizzards are very strong winter storms that are caused when high-speed winds blow
falling snow or pick up loose snow and carry it along. They occur wherever there are
high winds and snowfall.
Blanket of blistering snow …
Blizzards have wind speeds of above thirty-five kilometres per hour. They cause snow to
blow and form a white blanket through which almost nothing can be seen. Blizzards can
last for more than three hours. The worst blizzards occur in Antarctica, where they last for
over a week, and wind speeds reach a hundred kilometres per hour. Blizzards are common
here because winter brings lots of storms and cyclones, which create blizzards.
Blizzards cause heavy
snowfall, making it very
difficult to see ahead.
Blizzards can block
roads and railway lines,
bringing transport to
a standstill.
TICKER In 1888, a strong blizzard struck the north-eastern part of the US. More than four hundred people
