Abstract
The role of renewable-distributed generation is growing rapidly with the evolution of the smart grid concept in the modern power sector. With the effect of the new reformation in the Indian power sector, Government of India (GoI) reformed its power sector and shifted its inclination towards harnessing renewable energy sources, thereby increasing the contribution of renewable distributed generation technology to reduce the demand–supply gap. Rural India is benefitting greatly as a result of renewable distributed generation technology as electricity is finally reaching these remote pockets with minimum transmission and distribution losses; furthermore, more flexibility is given to match demand variability. India’s increasing renewable energy capacity also withstands its global commitment to help in the reduction of carbon emissions for the purpose of a sustainable future. In this article, we focus on the availability, current status, economical benefits, technical advantage, and the future potential of renewable distributed generation in India. We discuss the government’s initiative and programme to help in increasing the utilization of renewable distributed generation in India.
