Mallorcan
midwife toad
What I look like Ants are a part of the Mallorcan
midwife toad’s diet.
I am a small toad with a flattened body so I can
enter burrows and crevices easily, which is where
I live. I have large eyes, long legs, and smooth
skin. In my family, all the females are bigger than
the males. We eat insects and other invertebrates.

Did you know? Before 1977, humans had
only seen fossils of me.
The Mallorcan midwife toad That year, they found me
produces a poisonous mucous on living secretly in difficult-
its back to keep itself moist. This to-reach limestone
poison can kill a rabbit by simple canyons of northern
contact but is harmless to humans. Mallorca. So they call me
a true ‘living fossil’. When
8–9 I was growing in an egg,
my father protected me
and carried me in a string
around his legs, instead of
my mother. All midwife
toad daddies do that.
Chance survival
Since 2004, my family has grown in
number but we are still in danger.
We are such a small family and our
home is so small, that in case of an
extreme natural event, we could all
die at once.
