Good wind, bad wind

Wind is a very strong force in nature. The higher its speed, the more energy it has.
The wind’s strength, or energy, is useful, but if not controlled, it can also be harmful.

When wind is good, it is very good…

Human beings have been using wind energy for hundreds of years. Windmills were used
to grind grain. Sailing ships used wind energy to move forward. The greatest explorers—
Christopher Columbus, Captain Cook, and Vasco da Gama—used sailing ships. In modern
times, wind farms have been set up to catch the wind and use its energy. Modern wind
energy machines are called wind turbine generators.

Energy from the wind does not pollute the environment, and unlike coal or petrol, wind
will never be depleted. Also, unlike fossil fuels, wind energy does not produce greenhouse
gases, which heat up the atmosphere. It does not produce any poisonous waste. The
pollution caused by fossil fuels is destroying the habitats of animals and birds. But
wind energy does not harm nature.

Friendly winds helped
explorers sail across
the seas and discover
new lands.

TICKER Over two thousand years ago, Persians used wind energy to pump water.
