No fresh water ENDANGERED

The loss of wetlands in the countries we migrate to in winter is the
main reason for our decreasing population. In these countries, farmers have
begun using fresh water for growing crops. Dams have been built on rivers,
and several important natural lakes, like the large Poyang Lake, have become
smaller. As a result, we don’t have a home in winter. Pollution and pesticides

are also harming us. To top it all, we are hunted
in Afghanistan and Pakistan!

In 2003, the United Nations Environment Programme
and the International Crane Foundation launched the
Siberian Crane Wetland Project to protect our habitats
in China and India. Sixteen sites, along my migration
route, have been selected for the purpose. Several
protected areas have been marked out in China,
Russia, and India as well.
