Bengal florican

Mr Mustard

I am a blackish-mustard coloured bustard with white wings. Females and young
floricans are sandy-brown and have buffish-white wings. I have yellow legs and
my face is entirely brown-black.

Plain speak

I am a quiet bird but when
disturbed, I make a metallic
‘chik-chik’ noise. Our
breeding season extends
from March to August. I can
often be spotted early in the
morning or in the evening.

The Terai region is dry grassland with small shrubs and forests. Cultivator’s crime

The Terai plains have become
important agricultural areas.
As a result, our homes are
being taken over by farmers
to grow crops.

Did you know?

The Bengal florican was
once commonly found
in the grasslands of
North India, Nepal,
and the Brahmaputra

Valley of Assam. Today
there are less than a
thousand left!
