I am dark on top but my belly is
bright orange or yellow, which warns
predators, like water birds and
hedgehogs, to not attack me. In case
they do, I produce a milky poisonous
substance, so they cannot eat me. I don’t
like winter so much, so I hibernate under
leaves or mud.
I might be gone soon
There are such little portions of my
home left, especially in the United
Kingdom, that I don’t have a place
to live. In the last fifty years, there
has been a 90 per cent decrease in
the number of ponds here. Water
pollution is another one of our
major concerns.

Habitats Directive, the Berne Convention, and the Wildlife
and Countryside Act (1981). Newt fences are also becoming LC
popular; these prevent us from entering construction sites.
But unless I am given my clean pond back, I have a slim
chance of surviving.
