WORLD’S WORST 40-41
An eruption in Mount
St Helens was preceded
by earthquakes and
steam-venting episodes,
which lasted for two
months. About sixty
people died or went
missing in the volcanic
mudflows that followed
the eruption.
Debris from Other big mudslides
landslides block
water channels The famous 1980 volcanic eruption of Mount
St Helens, Washington, DC, US, caused snow, ice,
Mudslide and glaciers to melt, forming a series of volcanic
mudflows. These flows fell into the Columbia river,
Submarine landslide blocking its shipping channel.
Deadly landslides followed ten days of heavy rainfall in
the province of Southern Leyte in the Philippines. At
10.30 a.m. on 17 February, 2006, a mass of sludge and
rocks flowed down the slopes of nearby Mount Can-abag.
Guinsaugon village was covered in a few
minutes. About 1,126
lives were lost.
Did you know?
A giant four-legged robot
weighing 3800 kilograms is
helping prevent landslides by
securing mountain walls in Italy.
It’s machine
against nature!
Landslides comprise a large
number of ground movement
such as rock falls, shallow
debris falls, and so on
to fall into the Bay. This, in turn, caused a tsunami that had waves, which were five hundred metres high!
